How to Muddle
To ”muddle” means combining ingredients, and this is usually done at the bottom of a glass used for mixing, using a muddler and pressing ingredients prior to mixing them into the liquid ingredients.
What is a muddler? It is a long pestle shaped utensil; usually looks like a bat, often made of wood but can be made of steel or even plastic having teeth on the bottom of it. It has uses for both ends. The large end is used to mash the ingredients whereas the skinny, flat end is used most often to mix them.
As you think about the items you need to stock your bar, remember it is a great idea to have both the wood and plastic muddlers. You can use the wood muddler for herbs, such as the mint used in Mojitos and Mint Juleps. You should use the plastic muddler for fruits, such as the blueberries used in the Blueberry Yogurtini, and other ingredients.
